Alameda County  


Support Groups in Alameda County for the families of people who have a mental illness


The family support groups which are listed below provide those who attend with the opportunity to ask questions share their experiences and support each other as they struggle to help and cope with family member(s) with mental health issues. Most of the groups are intended for families of an adult with mental illness. There is no charge to attend and the information shared at meetings is kept confidential by all participants.

Albany – Berkeley – Oakland

NAMI East Bay Support Group for Families of Children, Adolescents & Teens with mental illness

African American Family Support Group – 4th Tuesday, 5:30pm-7:30pm

Family Caregivers of Older Adults with Mental Illness – 4th Thursday, 1pm-2:30pm. North Oakland Senior Center, 5714 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Oakland. For more information call at 510-601-1074. 

Kaiser Family Education and Support Group - 6 week series. Wednesdays, 5:30pm-6:50pm. 3900 Broadway, Oakland. Call Andrea Glower at (510) 752-8305 to pre-register. Not a drop-in group; Individuals must be a Kaiser member to attend this group.

Family & Caregiver Support Group - 1st Wednesday, 6pm-7:30pm, FERC main office, 440 Grand Ave., Suite 360, Oakland; Families with loved ones of any age. Call 510-746-1700 or our Warm Line at 888-896-3372.

San Leandro

Fremont – Union City   

South Alameda County Family Support Group – 1st& 3rd Tuesday, 7pm-8:30pm, Eden United Church of Christ, 21455 Birch Street, Hayward, (meeting rooms are in the very back of the church). Monolingual Support Groups

Chinese-Language Family Support Groups - Family Support for Healthy Minds–Mandarin & Cantonese speaking families meet the 1st Saturday each month from 10am-12pm at the Chinese Christian Herald Crusades Building 523-8th St. Oakland.  Call 510-489-3460 for Mandarin or 510-362-1456 for Cantonese for more info.

This listing of support groups was developed by NAMI Alameda County and is now published by the Family Education and Resource Center (FERC), a program of the Mental Health Association of Alameda County (MHAAC).


NAMI is an organization of relatives, parents, spouses, siblings and children of people who have a serious mental illness.  There are four NAMI Chapters in Alameda County; each Chapter provides information, education and mutual support to families in Alameda County.
