The Family Caregiver Advocacy & Support Program
Our focus: Supporting Families with Adult loved ones in John George Psychiatric Pavilion or in the Criminal Justice System
Who we are: this program is a free, central source of information, referral and advice for anyone in Alameda County who is trying to help a relative or friend with mental illness who has been admitted to John George Psychiatric Pavilion or is in the Criminal Justice System. The program provides information on the mental health system and law, referral to public and private services, and advice and help in sorting out options and making informed decisions.
Who Is Eligible: Alameda County residents who are caring for or are concerned about someone over the age of 18 with severe mental illness and is admitted to John George Psychiatric Pavilion or is currently in the Criminal Justice System.

The Family Caregiver Advocacy Specialist is stationed at the Mental Health Association office on Monday - Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday. She is at John George Psychiatric Pavilion on Monday - Thursday from 5:00 -7:30 p.m., where she can assist family caregivers in learning about John George Pavilion, mental illnesses, recovery, community resources and provide advocacy when needed. She can also assist family caregivers in completing AB 1424 forms (which is a way for family members to provide information to your loved ones care providers).
She also leads a Family Support Group at John George Psychiatric Pavilion - held on the First and Third Thursday of the month from 5:30 to 6:30pm, in the court house - located at 2060 Fairmont Dr., San Leandro, CA 94578.
If your adult loved one has been taken to jail and you need advice or assistance, please call the Family Caregiver Advocacy Specialist at 510-835-0188.
She can help you navigate the Criminal Justice/ Mental Health System, advise you on how to input information into the jail and learn whom to talk with regarding your loved one. She can also explain how Behavioral Health Court works and help in referring your loved one when appropriate.
